high risk construction work

what it is and how to stay safe

Every day, construction workers put their lives at risk in order to build our homes, businesses, and roads. While many people think of construction work as being relatively safe, there are a number of high-risk activities that can lead to serious injuries or even death. In this blog post, we will discuss what high-risk construction work is and how you can stay safe while working in this dangerous industry!

What Is High-Risk Construction Work?

High-risk construction work is defined as any work that has the potential to cause severe injury or ill health. According to the Government of South Australia, there are more than 18 activities that are defined as high-risk construction work, including:

– Falling risk of more than 3 meters
– Tasks carried out on a telecommunication towner
– Demolition of structure that is load-bearing or related to the integrity of the structure
– Anything involving asbestos
– Changes or repairs to a structure that will need support in order not to collapse
– Construction near or in a confined space
– Near a trench or shaft that’s either in a tunnel or with a depth greater than 1.5 meters
– Any construction using explosives
– Work near or on pressurised gas distribution mains or piping
– Work near or on chemical fuel or refrigerant lines

WHAT IS A

Safe Work Method Statement Template?

Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) is a document that outlines the safety risks and controls associated with a particular work activity.SWMS templates are used to assess and manage the risks involved in high-risk construction work and must be completed before any work begins. The purpose of an SWMS is to ensure that all workers are aware of the risks associated with their work and that these risks are properly controlled.

While every SWMS will be different, depending on the specific work activity being undertaken, there are a few key elements that should always be included:

  • A description of the work to be undertaken
  • The hazards associated with the work
  • The controls that will be put in place to eliminate or minimize the risks
  • The roles and responsibilities of those involved in the work
  • The emergency procedures to be followed in the event of an accident or incident.

This document should be signed off by every contractor, worker, and supervisor who will work on the job.

If your team or company is involved with any of these types of work activities, having a Safe Work Method Statement is absolutely essential, according to the Health and Safety Regulation 2011, before a project is started.

As you can see, an SWMS is a vital tool for ensuring the safety of workers undertaking high-risk construction work. Therefore, if you are involved in any type of high-risk work, be sure to have a valid SWMS in place before starting the job!
